Merry-Go-Round

I climbed upon the platform

With peaking hopes,

And took my seat

With a friendly horse.

It grinned ear to ear,

And in an uncanny way,

My expression may as well

Have been the horse’s mirror.

With an exhilarating jolt

The ride began to whir.

Up and down I went

As life passed by me.

The figures on the ground

Quickly became a blur.

I could barely make out

My family observing.

Round and round I went,

Happy as could be.

I could feel my face

Stick in its place.

The ride came to an end

And I took a step off the platform

In the same place

I had gotten on.

I looked back at my horse;

Its glowing smile had gone,

But I could still make out

Where it once was.

My family insisted that

The ride could not be altered;

That it had been the same

And always will be.

I walked away then

Knowing well and true

That sometime I would

Climb upon it again.
